White collar crime is a distinctive branch of criminology that is defined by the unique nature of the illicit
activity. The possible criminal activities under the white collar umbrella include fraud, forgery, bribery,
insider trading, and embezzlement, among others. The majority of white collar crimes are committed within a
corporate context, which is where the original reference of white collar was derived from. White collar crime is
also distinguished in contrast to blue collar crimes, which tend to be more violent in their execution. Overall,
since white collar crime is often committed by wealthier or more prominent individuals, it is usually motivated by
greed or personal interest in the business arena. Because of this, white collar crime is often more expensive.
Lawyers who specialize in white collar crime would focus on the legal ins and outs of this field of criminology in
order to better prosecute or defend such cases.
